Bring back Rafael Benitez to the Kop

With the defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday evening, Liverpool Football Club has took a plunged into a new depth of crisis. The reason Kop boss, Roy Hodgson mentioned during the post match conference for the loss at Anfield was “it was a bad day at office”, and he blames the lacks of support from the crowds.

I think we all have given him all the backings and supports since his appointment. There are no reason for him to laid the blames on the supporters. Although, he cannot be solely blamed for the defeat at Anfield yesterday, the players are largely at fault too.

The board has been patience with Hodgson and has given him the time to move forward his plans for the team. How much longer do we need to wait until NESV or John W. Henry finally sees that it is crucial to replace the manager now? There aren’t any lack of candidates for the manager post to select from, as Martin O’Neil, Frank Rijkaard and Rafael Benitez are all but available.

Rafael Benitez There will be some segment of the Reds supporters opposing to the re-appointment of Rafael Benitez. But why we need to set aside the ruckus he has caused during his last tenure and give the helm at Anfield back to Rafael Benitez at this crucial time?

First of all, the core of the team has been employed by Rafa. The tactical aspects of the team will remain intact and removes all the negative approach from Hodgson’s plan. Our defence are in a shambles with the man-marking system deployed by Hodgson. Do we have this kind of problem over the zonal marking system during Benitez?

NESV and John W. Henry needs to reassess the every possible angles of changing the manager before the transfer windows re-opens in two days time. The Reds were once a fearsome opponent at European arena but now we can’t even beat a bottom of the league table team at our own backyard.

Why not employ Frank Rijkaard or Martin O’Neil? We doesn’t want to repeat the same mistake all over again. New manager, new tactical plans, new backroom staffs and a new headache. Rafael Benitez still has some unfinished business at Anfield, back him up financially and he’ll give us the results.

Don’t mistaken me for as a pro-Rafa or anti-Hodgson regime. I’ve backed Hodgson to succeed Benitez but I didn’t realised that he doesn’t have a clue on how to handle a massive club like Liverpool Football Club. He is dragging us down and not the opposite way.

Is it the right time to bring back Rafael Benitez? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Goal Highlights: Liverpool 0-1 Wolves

Stephen Ward stunned the Kop with the only goal of the game as Liverpool slumped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves on Wednesday night.

The Irish midfielder struck a 56 minute winner as Mick McCarthy's men moved off the foot of the Barclays Premier League table with a famous Anfield triumph.

The result means Roy Hodgson's side have now lost eight league matches so far this season and remain 12 in the standings, 12 points adrift of fourth placed Chelsea with a game in hand.

The pre-match chatter had centred upon the return to action of Steven Gerrard while the sad passing of ex-Reds Bill Jones and Avi Cohen meant there was a pause prior to kick- off as Anfield paid its respects with a minute's applause.

The fitting tribute was followed by a hungry start by the home side, perhaps unsurprising given that this was their first run-out in the league since their 3-1 reversal at Newcastle United on December 11.

The adverse weather conditions had put paid to the Reds' hopes of adding to the fans' festive cheer any earlier, but they were almost celebrating a belated gift when Fernando Torres exposed the Wolves rearguard on nine minutes.

A quick-thinking free-kick by the Spaniard sent Raul Meireles through on goal but the No.4 was denied his first in a red shirt by a fine point-blank stop from Wayne Hennessey.

If Kopites felt that was the beginning of the onslaught they would be sadly mistaken as the visitors began to grow in confidence.

Indeed, few observers had given the visitors any hope of upsetting Liverpool at Anfield in the run up to the encounter, but they almost snatched the lead on 17 minutes when Glen Johnson's superb defensive header prevented Stephen Hunt from having a free sight of goal at the far post. [Read more…]

Hodgson unfazed by Benitez availability

Benítez left Liverpool at the end of the season to take over at Inter Milan, but has been dismissed from the Italian club following a disappointing run in the domestic league and in Europe.

Roy Hodgson, however, suggested that logic would dictate that Liverpool would never have let Benítez go only to re-employ the Spaniard six months later.

Liverpool recorded a poor first half to the season, going into the Christmas period in ninth place, well behind their rivals of recent seasons Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, Hodgson said there was no reason why his side could not push to break into the coveted top four, which would ensure Champions League football next season.

Match Highlights: Liverpool 0-0 Utrecht

Liverpool endured a frustrating 90 minutes as they rounded off their Europa League Group K campaign with a goalless draw against Utrecht on Wednesday night.

The Reds created the better openings but could not find the breakthrough to equal the club's record of nine successive home victories in Europe.

However, the result does ensure that Roy Hodgson's men conclude the group stage undefeated with 10 points from six games played and means they can now look forward to Friday's draw for the knockout stages.

Ahead of the match the boss opted to make 10 changes to the side that lost at Newcastle with stand-in skipper Martin Skrtel the only survivor.

It saw Nathan Eccleston make his first ever start for the club while there were also chances for the likes of Joe Cole, Danny Wilson and Milan Jovanovic to impress.

The changes in personnel did little to instigate a fast start to the proceedings though and the only effort of note in the early exchanges came on eight minutes when Jovanovic crashed a rasping 25 yard drive against the crossbar.

It was the highlight of a somewhat inauspicious opening half as the lack of competitive edge meant neither side passed the ball with any real urgency.

Fabio Aurelio curled a free-kick in a dangerous position against the visitors' wall while at the other end Wilson gave another glimpse of his outstanding promise when he denied Ricky van Wolfswinkel a shot on goal.

The Scot then headed Jonjo Shelvey's left-wing corner over the top before the Dutch outfit suffered a huge blow on the stroke of half-time when van Wolfswinkel was carried off injured on a stretcher. [Read more…]

Robbie Fowler backs Hodgson to be remained as manager

ROBBIE Fowler says he expects Liverpool owner John W Henry to afford Roy Hodgson more time, but believes "three or four" additions will be needed during the January transfer window if the club are to compete in the Premier League's top six.

Henry last night called for patience from the club's supporters, stating that there would be no "quick decisions" despite an inconsistent league campaign so far, and Fowler says the club's tradition of backing its managers would continue.

Speaking to Talksport, the former Reds hero - who now plies his trade with Perth Glory in the Australian A-League.

"Liverpool are better than they were at the start of the season, which gives us a bit of hope.

"I think in January you are looking at maybe three or four good players to come in, and then we will see where it takes us.

"I think they [the owners] will stick with Roy. It is a bit of a transitional period; Roy is new in the job, and Liverpool are renowned throughout their history for sticking by their managers, and I think they will do so again."

"At the start of the season you would probably have taken fifth place if I'm honest," he said. "Obviously Liverpool's standards over the years mean they will be looking to compete in the top four, so they can attract better players and go onto bigger and better things.

"They did turn the corner recently after a bad start, though they have had a few indifferent results of late. But I think the league table is not as bad as people are making out."

Goal Highlights: Newcastle 3-1 Liverpool

Liverpool endured another away day to forget as Newcastle gave new manager Alan Pardew the perfect start by sending the Reds crashing to a 3-1 defeat.

Kevin Nolan gave the home side the lead after 15 minutes before Dirk Kuyt levelled shortly after half-time as Liverpool turned up the pressure and looked the side most likely to go on and take all three points.

But late strikes from Joey Barton and Andy Carroll ensured it was Pardew and not Roy Hodgson celebrating come the final whistle as the Reds succumbed to their seventh league defeat of the season.

Hodgson was able to restore Fernando Torres to his starting XI after the Spain star had missed Liverpool's last outing against Aston Villa due to the birth of his son.

That was the solitary change made by the boss to the team that had produced such a pulsating performance, with Ryan Babel the man making way.

While Liverpool went into the game on a high following Monday's comprehensive dispatch of Villa, Newcastle had undergone a week of change following the dismissal of Chris Hughton.

The Magpies moved to replace him with Alan Pardew, and the 49-year-old took his place in the St James' Park dugout for the first time.

The Londoner had never managed to mastermind a victory over Liverpool in his coaching career prior to kick off, while no other club has inflicted more league defeats upon Newcastle than the Reds.

And it was the visitors who carved out the first real opportunity of note on 10 minutes when a half-cleared free-kick was worked back into the area by Raul Meireles. The ball broke for Sotirios Kyrgiakos, whose powerful drive was beaten away by Tim Krul. [Read more…]

Transfer rumours: Ronaldinho, Suarez and Johnson

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson insists there is no truth in the rumours linking AC Milan star Ronaldinho with a move to Anfield.

Hodgson denied speculation linking both Ronaldinho and Ajax captain Luis Suarez, and although he admitted he was a long-term admirer of Aston Villa winger Ashley Young, he insisted there had been no communication between the clubs.

Glen Johnson It has been suggested Liverpool would be willing to listen to offers for Johnson with the England international believed to be unsettled on Merseyside but Hodgson denied claims Glen Johnson would be offloaded in January, and insisted the new owners were looking to build the team long-term, and the club would spend sensibly.

The likes of Tottenham, Juventus and Bayern Munich have all been linked with the former Portsmouth man, but Hodgson insists the full-back is going nowhere.

Hodgson revealed there were also plans to award midfielder Lucas Leiva a new contract.

"A couple of weeks ago, Damien Comolli mentioned to me about him wanting to get in touch with Lucas's agent to discuss a new contract, but I can't quite frankly remember where we are,"

"Certainly if you ask me the question 'Is Lucas welcome at the club and would we like to keep him?' then the answer is a resounding 'yes'." – said Roy Hodgson.

Steven Gerrard will not be featured at Toon

Roy Hodgson has contradicted the verdict of Liverpool's head of sports medicine, Dr Peter Brukner, insisting Steven Gerrard will not be fit for the weekend trip to Newcastle.

Brukner gave a positive verdict on Gerrard's fitness on November 30, revealing the Liverpool skipper was on course to make a return from a hamstring tear at St James' Park.

However, Hodgson has ruled Gerrard out of the weekend encounter, insisting the following match at Fulham is a more realistic date for the midfielder's return.

Meanwhile, Hodgson also revealed Daniel Agger could make a long-awaited return from a calf problem against Fulham.

Ronaldinho to Liverpool?

Seven years after Manchester United nearly signed him, Ronaldinho could be on his way to the Premier League.

RonaldinhoAccording to ItaSportPress, Roy Hodgson is planning to swoop the former World Player of the Year from the San Siro on a free transfer - given that he is buried behind Pato, Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on AC Milan's roster.

His $10million (£6.3million) annum wage demand, however, may be too much for Liverpool to pay for a player so far past his prime. The 30-year-old has also been linked with moves back to Brazil or to the Los Angeles Galaxy - not indications that he is serious about playing his best football.

Ronaldinho aside, Damien Comolli believes that the economic difficulties facing Europe will create a buyers market come January.

Would Ronaldinho be a good signing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Itandje quits Liverpool

Liverpool keeper Charles Itandje will join Greek side Atromitos on 1 January 2011 after being released from his contract.

The French-born 28-year-old, who recently switched nationality to Cameroon, joined Liverpool in 2007.

Charles Itandje However, he made just seven appearances for the club and none since he was widely criticised for his antics during the 2009 Hillsborough memorial service.

Members of the congregation complained Itandje disrespected the service and he was suspended by the club for 14 days.

However, he never forced his way back into the first-team reckoning and, following a loan at another Greek side Kavala last season, he will now move to the country on a permanent basis to join Atromitos.

Goal Highlights: Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa [VIDEO]

Ryan Babel helped to ensure that Gerard Houllier's Anfield return ended in disappointment as Liverpool eased to a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Monday night.

The Dutch striker came in for the missing Fernando Torres and capped an impressive showing with the killer second goal as the Reds bounced back from last week's frustrating defeat at Spurs.

The No.19's clinical drive came straight after David Ngog's diving header had given the hosts a 14th minute lead and helped secure a win that has propelled Roy Hodgson's men up to eighth in the table, seven points adrift of Manchester City in fourth spot.

Maxi Rodriguez then put the seal on a solid all-round showing when he netted the third of the night by guiding home Ngog's cut back on 55 minutes.

The pre-match chatter had been firmly focused upon Houllier's first L4 experience as an opposition manager but as the team news filtered through, the spotlight shifted towards Babel, who was named in the side in place of Torres.

The Spaniard had withdrawn from duty after it emerged that his wife had gone into labour, providing the Dutchman with another chance to show what he could do in a much-craved striking role.

The former Ajax man looked up for the occasion too, but it wasn't just him who had the bit between his teeth. There was an energy to Liverpool's play right from the word 'go' and they could have been ahead inside two minutes when a Raul Meireles free-kick from the right caused chaos in the Villans' penalty area.

The visitors failed to clear their lines on at least two occasions and were left to heave a huge sigh of relief when Dirk Kuyt seared a volley off target from Ngog's knock down. [Read more…]

Pepe Reina howler almost cost Liverpool qualification in Europa League

Pepe Reina Pepe Reina held his hands up after his mistake prevented Liverpool celebrating progress to the knockout stages of the Europa League with a victory.

An uncharacteristic 61st-minute blunder from Reina – who claimed to have been bothered by a laser pen in the crowd during the first half – saw the goalkeeper allow a tame Eder Bonfim header to squirm through his grasp and over the goalline to earn Steaua Bucharest a 1-1 draw in Romania.

However, the 3-3 draw between FC Utrecht and Napoli meant Liverpool did enough to win through as Group K leaders with a game to spare.

But Reina, who was captain for the evening in the absence of injured duo Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, accepted the result could have been better but for his mistake.

An experimental Liverpool team packed with fringe players and youngsters had taken the lead through Milan Jovanovic's 19th-minute header.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson chose not to dwell on Reina's error, and instead pointed to an encouraging performance from his much-changed team.

Cole made his comeback after more than a month out through injury, while Ryan Babel, Milan Jovanovic and Fabio Aurelio were all handed rare starts in a team that also included youngsters Martin Kelly, Dani Pacheco and Danny Wilson.

And Hodgson believes his policy of giving the whole squad an opportunity in the Europa League is paying dividends.

Martin Kelly and Daniel Pacheco signed new deals

Kelly made his England Under-21 debut against Uzbekistan in August

Liverpool defender Martin Kelly and striker Daniel Pacheco have signed contract extensions to keep them at Anfield until 2014.

Home-grown 20-year-old Kelly, who made an impressive full Premier League debut in November's 2-0 win over Chelsea, has added another three years to his deal.

Pacheco, 19, who had been linked with a move to Real Sociedad in the summer, has extended his contract by two years.

The Spaniard was top-scorer at the 2010 Under-19 European Championship.

Kelly, who can also operate at centre-back, may find himself called upon more regularly over the next three months as Liverpool seek cover for injured captain Jamie Carragher.

Kelly impressed during a brief period on loan at Huddersfield in 2009.

Pacheco, whose appearance in Thursday's 1-1 Europa League draw against Steaua Bucharest was his first since September's Carling Cup defeat on penalties to Northampton, has struggled to force his way into manager Roy Hodgson's thoughts.

His only Premier League appearance so far this season was as an 86th-minute substitute against Manchester City in August.

He is yet to score in 13 appearances for the Reds.

Europa League: Steaua Bucharest 1-1 Liverpool

Liverpool sealed a place in the last 32 of the Europa League after a 1-1 draw with Steaua Bucharest in Romania on Thursday night.

Milan Jovanovic headed the Reds into a 19th minute lead when he converted Ryan Babel's cross, somewhat against the run of the early play.

Steaua drew level on the hour when a rare mistake from Pepe Reina allowed a tame header from Eder Bonfim to roll over the line.

Both sides had chances to win the game, with Sotirios Kyrgiakos coming closest when he cannoned a header against the crossbar.

However, the result was enough to secure a safe passage into the next stage of the competition for Liverpool with a game to spare.

The Reds touched down in the Romanian capital on Wednesday afternoon minus the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Fernando Torres, Raul Meireles, Glen Johnson and Dirk Kuyt.

Instead, Roy Hodgson decided to utilise the depth of his squad ahead of Monday's Barclays Premier League showdown with Aston Villa by naming a youthful travelling party that included teenage defenders Jack Robinson and John Flanagan. [Read more…]

Successful operation for Jamie Carragher

Liverpool have today confirmed Jamie Carragher has undergone a successful operation on the shoulder he dislocated at Tottenham last weekend.

Carragher is expected to be out for three months.

   "The operation went well,"

"It also confirmed this was the correct course of action to take to ensure Jamie makes a complete recovery." - said Peter Brukner, Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science at Anfield.

Carragher will now set out on the road to full fitness after undergoing successful surgery.

Jamie Carragher out for three months

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is likely to be out for three months after being told he requires surgery on his dislocated shoulder.

The 32-year-old suffered the injury in Sunday's Premier League defeat at Tottenham.

Carragher underwent a thorough examination at Liverpool's training ground yesterday but medical staff were unable to make a full assessment until this morning.

Carragher told the club's website:

"I'll be having surgery at the end of the week.

"The average is about 12 weeks. I'd like to come back before that but I've got to make sure it's right.

"It will probably be late February or early March when I'm looking to come back.

"It's difficult for me when I'm injured. It hasn't happened very often, and I'm very lucky with that I suppose, but maybe it's caught up with me a little bit now.

"I've been here before with a broken leg which put me out this length of time.

"It's not easy but you've got to get on with it, and it makes you more determined to get back.

"I'm sure towards the end of the season when people are maybe feeling a little bit tired I'll be raring to go."

The news is a huge blow for Liverpool, who are already without captain Steven Gerrard and Carragher's fellow defender Daniel Agger.

Gerrard is expected to be out for another three weeks with a hamstring injury sustained on England duty while Agger is hoping to return mid-December after a calf problem.

Carragher had captained the side in the absence of Gerrard at White Hart Lane when he was forced off with three minutes remaining.

Following his exit Liverpool conceded an injury-time goal to Aaron Lennon to lose 2-1, a defeat which leaves them 10th in the table.

Goal Highlights: Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool

And we usually love Lennon in Liverpool. On Sunday, though, it was a name to be cursed as the Tottenham winger, Aaron, struck the late, injury-time goal which denied Liverpool a point in an encounter they should, perhaps, have won. Instead it was a hard day’s night back up to Merseyside.

Spurs confirmed their status as the Premier League comeback kings with 16 points now earned from losing positions during this roller-coaster campaign and in a roller-coaster of a match which ended an week in which Arsenal have been beaten and qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League secured. The good times roll.

It was a game that had everything. To add to the goals there were injuries, the most serious of which was a dislocated shoulder suffered by Jamie Carragher, a missed penalty, yet another one by Jermain Defoe, who has incredibly failed from four of his past five, controversy over penalty appeals and chances galore. Fernando Torres will be tormented by two clear, one-on-ones which he fluffed, a shadow of his former self, all hesitancy when he used to be pure instinct. [Read more…]

England FA will compensate Liverpool for Steven Gerrard injury

The Football Association have confirmed their insurers will pay compensation to Liverpool for Steven Gerrard's hamstring injury.

Estimates say Liverpool will pocket £500,000 after their captain got injured in England's friendly defeat to France at Wembley on Wednesday.

The 30 year-old has been ruled out for a month, which could have a significant effect on his side's season after a recent revival came to an end at Stoke last Saturday.

The FA have been anxious to point out the cash will not come directly from them but an insurance scheme that has been set up, which has already paid out to Arsenal and Tottenham for injuries sustained by Theo Walcott and Jermain Defoe on international duty this season.

In a statement, the FA said: "The FA have in place comprehensive insurance to cover injuries sustained to players on international duty.

"The FA is one of a small number of countries that has a voluntary insurance scheme to cover players wages should they suffer injury on international duty.

"Liverpool do not need to pursue us for compensation as our insurers will cover the wages for Liverpool as this was clearly a legitimate injury."

Michael Owen was the subject of one of the more expensive claims when he was injured on World Cup duty in 2006.

The FA are one of the few national associations who run such an insurance scheme.

Wednesday night's opponents France do not for instance, whilst many smaller nations simply could not afford the premiums to cover their star players.

Video Highlights: Stoke City 2-0 Liverpool

Liverpool suffered their fifth Barclays Premier League defeat of the season as they went down 2-0 at Stoke City on Saturday evening.

The Reds struggled to cope with the physical approach of the home side throughout and were undone by second-half goals from Ricardo Fuller and Kenwyne Jones.

With the points lost, Roy Hodgson's side's night was compounded when Lucas Leiva was sent-off for a second bookable offence deep into injury-time.

It means the Reds drop to 11th in the table, six points adrift of Manchester City who occupy the fourth and final Champions League place.

Significantly, the pre-match talking points had centred upon how Liverpool would combat the threat posed by the set piece delivery of Delap et al. Few sides in the Barclays Premier League can boast an aerial presence as dangerous as Stoke and it was no surprise to see Hodgson respond by bringing in Standard Chartered LFC Player of the Month for October, Sotirios Kyrgiakos in place of Martin Kelly.

The big Greek has been in imperious form so far this season and he was forced into action within 60 seconds, blocking Ryan Shawcross's well-struck shot from the edge of the Reds' penalty area. [Read more…]

Agger may miss the rest of the season

Liverpool have suffered a blow with the news that defender Daniel Agger is out of action through injury indefinitely.

Daniel Agger The Danish stopper has been hampered by a calf injury this term and he was dispatched to see a specialist earlier this week.

Agger's last appearance was on 12 October when he played for Denmark against Cyprus in Euro 2012 qualifier.

   "Agger could be very long-term,"

"They can't put a date on it and at the moment he can't train - he has just got to rest.

"They are anxious that bone doesn't form. It's a calcification issue."

The 25-year-old defender visited a specialist in London last week and has been told not to train to allow the problem to rectify itself.

"Training would certainly accelerate the calcification," added Hodgson. "Now they have to wait and hope the body breaks down the calcifying elements before he can even think about training again.

"He has just got to rest and wait for the next time he goes to see the specialist again." - said Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson.

It is the latest in a line of fitness problems for Agger, who missed almost four months of last season with a back injury.

The Dane last played for Liverpool on 25 September when he came on as a substitute in the 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland.

I hope he will be back in the second half of the season.

Europa League: Liverpool 3-1 Napoli

Substitute Steven Gerrard struck a sensational second-half hat-trick as Liverpool came from behind to snatch a 3-1 victory in a keenly contested Europa League clash with Napoli on Thursday night.

The skipper deflected home visiting stopper, Morgan De Sanctis's attempted clearance on 75 minutes before slamming home a late penalty and a delightful dinked finish to earn the points after the visitors had taken the lead through Ezequiel Lavezzi's smart first half strike.

It means Roy Hodgson's side remain top of Group K, three points ahead of Steaua Bucharest after four matches played.

Ahead of the clash, the Barclays Premier League showdown with Chelsea occupied much of the pre-match chatter and Hodgson's team selection indicated he had one eye on the game with the leaders, as he made six changes from Bolton.

In came Glen Johnson for his first appearance since October 3 while the likes of Jay Spearing and Jonjo Shelvey, who impressed in Naples, were once again given the opportunity to shine.

As if buoyed by recent results Liverpool were fast out of the traps too but, despite some good possession, it was the visitors who looked the more dangerous.

On three minutes, a well worked counter attack saw Lavezzi break down the right flank and when he fizzed a low ball into the six yard box, Paul Konchesky was fortunate to see his attempted clearance crash into the side netting of Pepe Reina's goal.

The Serie A outfit appeared to have more of a threat in the attacking third and midway through the half they had another sight of goal as Edinson Cavani latched onto a clever through pass and smashed a right foot volley into the stand.

For all Liverpool's endeavour there had been little to shout about for the home support and Napoli continued to probe, with Lavezzi seizing upon Shelvey's misplaced pass and drilling a venomous shot just beyond Reina's left-hand post.

With the away side in full flow, the writing appeared to be on the wall for Hodgson's men and on 28 minutes they found themselves behind. Christian Poulsen misjudged a header in his own half allowing Cavani to nod the ball into the path of Lavezzi. The Argentine raced into the penalty area before showing fine poise to slip the ball beyond the advancing Reina.

Liverpool needed a response and they should have had it just three minutes later as David Ngog exchanged a neat one-two with Poulsen before stabbing his effort from 12 yards just wide.

Johnson then went close to marking his return from injury in style but saw his rasping left foot drive well saved by De Sanctis.

In truth, Liverpool's first-half display would not have impressed John Henry and new director of football strategy Damien Comolli watching in the stand, and it was no surprise that Hodgson made the decision to introduce Gerrard as a half-time replacement for Milan Jovanovic.

The change immediately sparked the hosts' attack into life and on 51 minutes the inspirational No.8 should have levelled but he flashed his shot high into the stand after De Sanctis had brilliantly denied Ngog from close range.

There was a clear improvement in Liverpool's approach play and they again went close just shy of the hour mark when Shelvey miscued his far post header following a great run and cross from Ngog.

Next it was Raul Meireles's turn to hold his head in hands, steering wide from 10 yards out after Shelvey had caused havoc in the Napoli defence.

There was no doubt which side was now in the ascendancy and after sending a low free-kick inches past the far post, the skipper finally levelled matters in the most fortunate of circumstances.

A probing run from Shelvey should have been cut out by the Italians' rearguard, but a poor back pass allowed Gerrard to race in on De Sanctis and ricochet the 'keeper's attempted clearance into the far corner of the net.

It was a huge slice of luck for Hodgson and co but one they would have felt their second half showing deserved.

With the clock ticking down the Reds continued to push forward and two minutes from time they snatched the lead when Gerrard converted from the spot after Johnson was felled in the area.

And the midfielder rubbed salt in Napoli's wounds a minute later, latching onto substitute Lucas Leiva's well-timed challenge and clipping the ball over De Sanctis to seal victory.

Fernando Torres not going to Chelsea

Carlo Ancelotti Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has insisted he has no plans to bid for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

The Blues, who lead the Premier League by five points, have already scored 27 league goals this season - five more than any of their rivals.

"In this moment, we don't really need to have a striker, a fantastic striker, like Torres.

"We can be competitive in all competitions with this squad. The most important thing is to avoid injury." – said Ancelotti

Chelsea are one of several clubs to have been linked with a move for Torres, who has only scored twice for Liverpool this season as the Merseysiders have struggled for form.

Reds' manager Roy Hodgson's admission that the club may have to fend off approaches for the Spain international when asked about the possibility of a Manchester United approach had fuelled speculation.

But Ancelotti, whose side also hit 103 Premier League goals last season, said he planned to promote from within when the time came to replace forwards Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba.

"I always said that Torres is not our aim for the future because we have trust in a lot of young players,"

"We also have fantastic strikers in Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou and fantastic young players like Daniel Sturridge and Gael Kakuta." - stated the Italian.

Sturridge moved to Stamford Bridge from Manchester City in July 2009 and scored five goals in 20 appearances last season.

Frenchman Kakuta, 19, whose controversial move from Lens led to the Blues receiving a transfer ban that they later successfully appealed against, has appeared six times this season although he is yet to score or complete a full match for the club.

Chelsea have a long-stated aim of becoming self-sufficient and have scaled back their spending after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich initially funded a series of high-profile signings on taking control of the club in July 2003.

Chelsea's main acquisitions in the summer were midfielders Ramires and Yossi Benayoun, who cost about £17million and £5million from Benfica and Liverpool respectively.

Their arrivals helped balance the departures of Michael Ballack and Joe Cole, who both left at the end of their contracts.

Benitez takes a swipe at Hogdson

Rafael Benítez has launched a withering attack on Roy Hodgson, telling him to stop complaining about what he inherited from him at Liverpool and suggesting Hodgson does not fully understand the intricacies of life at Anfield.

Rafael Benitez Hodgson, who has suffered a difficult start to his tenure and the job of succeeding the popular Benítez, has aimed a series of recent barbs in the Spaniard's direction bemoaning the size of the rebuilding job that faced him, claiming the squad lacks quality in depth and features other "people's left-over's". He also tried to claim that he has got Kenny Dalglish truly back on board at the club, whereas the legendary former player and manager was marginalised under Benítez. This last claim has particularly irked his predecessor.

Inter play Spurs at White Hart Lane on Tuesday in a Champions League Group A match, having beaten Harry Redknapp's side 4-3 in the San Siro a fortnight ago.

Prior to that match, Benitez criticised Liverpool's former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett as well as former managing director Christian Purslow.

And describing his departure from Anfield last summer, he said: "We have a saying in Spanish: 'White liquid in a bottle has to be milk.'

"I think that Mr Hodgson, he doesn't understand," said Benitez. "Every single press conference is even worse than the last one. He's talking about things that he doesn't know. And some people cannot see a priest on a mountain of sugar.

"Maybe he hasn't been in Liverpool too long. We gave the fans their pride - again. We fought for the fans, we fought for the club and we fought for our players. So maybe he cannot understand this.

"With £10m net spending, I left that squad with £300m value, 13 internationals.

"So, instead of talking about flips and flops, he has to concentrate on his job, try to do his best and not talk about the level of his players or the new players.

"Concentrate, try to do your best because it will be the best for the club and it will be the best for the fans." – Rafa Benitez

Responding to Hodgson's accusations that Benitez had banned Kenny Dalglish from Liverpool's Melwood training ground during his time in charge, the Spaniard said: "I brought back Kenny Dalglish to do a role in the club and Christian Purslow gave him another role."

Goal highlights: Bolton 0-1 Liverpool

Maxi Rodriguez's dramatic late winner secured Liverpool's first away victory of the Barclays Premier League season with a 1-0 triumph over Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

In a hard-fought encounter, Fernando Torres spurned the Reds' best opportunity of the first-half when he was thwarted by Jussi Jaaskelainen after going one-on-one with the Trotters' goalkeeper.

However, with the game seemingly heading for a draw, the Spaniard made amends by creating an opening for Maxi, who displayed great composure to fire home with four minutes left and seal a victory that moves Liverpool up to 12th in the table, just three points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Roy Hodgson kept faith with the same starting XI that defeated Blackburn Rovers last weekend as Liverpool went in search of their first back-to-back league wins since April.

It meant Torres, who ended his goal drought with the winner against Rovers, was once again supported in attack by Steven Gerrard, while Jamie Carragher continued to deputise at right-back.

But Bolton have enjoyed an impressive start to the 2010-11 campaign and heading into today's clash, had lost just once in the league so far - that defeat coming at Arsenal in September. [Read more…]

Liverpool were lucky to get away with all the three points at Reebok Stadium yesterday evening. Definitely, Hodgson has a good talking points to proved to the new owner when he meet John Henry and board this week.

Pepe for Manchester United? Not in a gazillion chances

In a recent report by the Guardian UK, the rumour mills are spinning off its wheel. Reds boss, Roy Hodgson quickly squashed the rumour by releasing this at Liverpool FC website.

"It (Reina to United) was just one of those stories that seems to occur - it's just disappointing and annoying,"

"Pepe is fantastic here, he is a lifeblood of this team.

"Everything he does around the club is excellent - he is always lively in the dressing room, he is always first class in training and he always wants to do more to improve.

"He demands better from those around him, he is always pushing people on. He is a player who we hold in the highest esteem.

"We have heard nothing from Manchester United and, more to the point, we don't want to hear anything from Manchester United.

"If (Alex) Ferguson is looking around at the end of the season and he has got lots of money to replace van der Sar, he might very well want Pepe Reina because he is the best around.

"But we do not want to sell him. I would like to think that we are going to become a successful club once again and Pepe is crucial to that."

Hodgson admits players like Reina, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are imperative to his rebuilding job in making Liverpool a real force to be reckoned with once again.

"We want to promise the players we have got here that we are going to be up there fighting once again and we are absolutely not looking to sell any of our better players," he added.

"But, equally, I would also be disappointed if teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona and all the teams with money were not looking at our players.

"If I was Fernando Torres, I would expect every top club in Europe to be chasing me. That's good as it means he's doing his job. But we don't need the money and we don't want to sell." – Roy Hodgson on speculation of Reina to Manchester United

Even though, Hodgson trying his best to keep all the best players in the team but I still have my doubts on how far will he lead Liverpool Football Club into?

Video Highlights: Liverpool 2-1 Blackburn Rovers

Fernando Torres rediscovered his scoring touch to earn Liverpool a thoroughly deserved 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Sunday afternoon.

The 26-year-old's winner was his first goal since the win over West Brom on August 29.

It came at the end of a crazy five minutes in which Sotirios Kyrgiakos had given the Reds a lead only to see it cancelled out by a Jamie Carragher own goal.

Rafa Benitez hits back at Liverpool’s former owners

Tom Hicks has pointed the fingers at Benitez Last Friday, Tom Hicks blames former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez for the declining results and which leads to the club’s financial turmoil during the Spaniard tenure.

But Rafa Benitez won’t be staying quiet about the critics thrown at him by the former Liverpool owner. Benitez has launched a cryptic attack on the club's ousted owners and current managing director Christian Purslow in an interview.

Hicks criticised Benitez for wasting much of the money he was given to spend during the latter half of his tenure.

But Benitez has insisted the Americans were to blame, citing their appointment of Purslow in the summer of last year as the beginning of a downward spiral that ended in the Spaniard's exit.

But in a bizarre outburst, Benitez compared events leading up to his departure to a bottle of milk.

"We have a saying in Spanish: 'White liquid in a bottle has to be milk'."

"What does this mean? It means that after 86 points and finishing second in the league, what changed?"

"The Americans, they chose a new managing director and everything changed.”

"So, what changed?”

"The managing director is involved in all the decisions: new lawyer, new chief of press, new manager, nine new players, new medical staff, new fitness coaches - they changed everything.”

"At the beginning, they changed the managing director who was talking with some players, and they changed everything that we were doing in the past.”

"So, if you want to ask again what was going on, it's simple: they changed something and, at the end, they changed everything.”

"So, white liquid in a bottle: milk. You will know who is to blame." – Rafael Benitez

It’s not the right time to play the “blame” games. It’s time for the new owner to straighten things up at Liverpool Football Club. Is Roy Hodgson’s time as a Liverpool manager been numbered?

POLL: Time to sack the manager?

After the performances at Goodison Park yesterday afternoon, many Reds supporters and fans left bedazzled at the team selection and tactics employed by Roy Hodgson.

In the poll below, please give your anonymous vote.

Time to sack the manager?

Everton 2-0 Liverpool: No fight, no class, no ideas

Liverpool were unable to secure city bragging rights as the Reds went down to a 2-0 defeat in the Merseyside derby with Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.

Tim Cahill put the Blues into a first-half lead with a powerful close-range strike after Seamus Coleman's cross had broken fortunately for him.

Mikel Arteta doubled the Blues' advantage moments into the second period when the Spaniard struck a thunderous drive beyond Pepe Reina from a half-cleared corner, and despite a late spell of pressure, Liverpool were unable to find a response.

After a hectic few days at Anfield, the game represented the final act in what will undoubtedly go down as one of the most historic weeks in the long and illustrious 118-year history of Liverpool Football Club.

New England Sports Ventures' acquisition of the club on Friday afternoon had provided everyone connected to the Red half of Merseyside with a surge in optimism as they geared up to make the short trek across Stanley Park.

There are few fixtures that can conjure up such raw emotion and passion as a Merseyside derby - and a little over 24 hours after meeting with the players and staff at Melwood, NESV Principal Owner John W Henry and Chairman Thomas Werner took their seats in the Goodison Park directors' box to sample that famed atmosphere first hand.

While much of the pre-match headlines had understandably centred on events off the field, the football talk had emphasised Liverpool's desire to return to winning ways following a disappointing run of league results. [Read more…]

Done deal

New England Sports Ventures (NESV) today announces that it has completed the purchase of Liverpool Football Club.

NESV wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to the Board of Liverpool FC for their diligence and their efforts on behalf of the Club and its supporters.

The transaction values the Club at £300m and eliminates all of the acquisition debt placed on LFC by its previous owners, reducing the Club's debt servicing obligations from £25m-£30m a year to £2m-£3m.

New England Sports Ventures is committed to winning and currently owns a portfolio of companies, including the Boston Red Sox, New England Sports Network, Fenway Sports Group and Roush Fenway Racing.

Liverpool’s drawn-out sale to the owners of the Boston Red Sox was completed Friday after a bitter trans-Atlantic court fight over English football’s most successful club with the previous American owners.

A youth walks past Liverpool Football Club's Anfield Stadium Liverpool, England, Friday, Oct. 15, 2010. (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) The $485 million deal (all dollar figures Canadian) with New England Sports Ventures ends the turbulent three-year ownership by Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr., which saw the Premier League giants saddled with crippling debts and falling into relegation danger this season.

“We are committed first and foremost to winning,” said John Henry, the financier who heads NESV. “We have a history of winning, and today we want LFC supporters to know that this approach is what we intend to bring to this great club.”

“As every Liverpool fan knows, the most nerve-racking way to win a match is by a penalty shootout,” - said club chairman Martin Broughton, referring to Liverpool’s fifth European Cup triumph against AC Milan in 2005.

The sale finally went through after Hicks and Gillett withdrew the temporary restraining order blocking the sale they had obtained in a Texas court. Later, they also dropped their claim for $1.6 billion in damages.

“The most important thing is that NESV have cleared us of all the debts which, frankly, shouldn’t have been on the club in the first place.”

“All that huge amount of money that our fans spend supporting our team, coming to games and all the other activities is now available for what it should be available for, to invest.” - managing director Christian Purslow.

The deal came on the day set as the deadline for repayment of the club’s debts to the Royal Bank of Scotland and Wells Fargo, which had risen to around $461 million including penalty fees.

Henry insisted that NESV’s deal wasn’t a leveraged buyout. The acquisition debt has been eliminated and the cost of servicing the club’s debt has slumped from $40 million to $48 million a year to $3.2 million to $4.8 million.

Amid the takeover turmoil, Liverpool is mired in the relegation zone after its worst start to a league season since 1953. Henry said it was too early to decide on specific plans, but noted the Red Sox are the second-highest spending club in baseball. Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson expects to have cash to spend in the January transfer window to strengthen the struggling team.

“In future we can invest in players in a different way,” – Roy Hodgson.

Liverpool Football Club will be sold to NESV

New England Sports Ventures’ prospects of taking control at Anfield before Sunday’s Merseyside derby rest on the verdict of a Texan judge expected to reveal whether the much-delayed deal can proceed after 1pm UK time on Friday.

Lawyers for the Reds, main creditor Royal Bank of Scotland and Boston’s NESV were gathering at 7am (1pm UK) at the 160th District Court in Dallas to seek the removal of a restraining order obtained by the current owners on Wednesday night.

If Judge Jim Jordan is persuaded to overturn the order he granted Tom Hicks and George Gillett, the agreed sale of the Reds to NESV should proceed.

After a second damning verdict in London’s High Court yesterday, lawyers for co-owner Tom Hicks immediately went back to the Dallas court last night for another hearing with Judge Jordan but it adjourned without resolution until today.

The early start in Texas today is because of the 4pm deadline (UK time) High Court judge Christopher Floyd gave the Americans to remove their restraining order in his decision against Hicks and Gillett in London yesterday.

The ruling was potentially undermined, however, by the judge’s decision to grant Hicks and Gillett until 4pm BST today to comply with the order, too late for the sale to be completed before the weekend. NESV’s counsel, David Chivers QC, told the court the sale could only be completed today if an order to transfer funds was given before 3pm.

With Hicks and Gillett not represented in court, there is little expectation that they will comply with the order, and even if they do it is predicted to be at the last minute.

Given those circumstances, the club would remain in limbo through the weekend, overshadowing a game that already has season-defining potential for both clubs.

Should the deal not go through RBS will finally face the decision that it has spent the last three days in court trying to avoid: what to do if the loans are not repaid on time.

A possible late offer from Mill Financial – who already own George Gillett’s half of the club – failed to materialise yesterday and, while it has not been completely ruled out, only a hugely-improved bid is likely to deflect the Reds board from their deal with NESV.

One complication was eased, when Peter Lim said he was withdrawing, having had a £325 million offer for the club rejected on Wednesday.

Broughton said he hoped to have a deal in place for Henry to attend Sunday’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park as Liverpool FC’s new owner.

You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Tom Hicks and George Gillett obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court

What on earth are the two clowns has been thinking? After the High Court ruling against them, Tom Hicks and George Gillett tried last night to derail Liverpool FC sale to the owners of the Boston Red Sox by obtaining a temporary injunction in a Dallas court.

Gillett and Hicks In a statement released by Liverpool FC official website yesterday, chairman Martin Broughton has described the temporary restraining order obtained by Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett in an attempt to stop a takeover deal as 'unwarranted and damaging' to the proceedings.

“Regrettably, Thomas Hicks and George Gillett have tonight obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court against the independent directors, Royal Bank of Scotland PLC and NESV to prevent the transaction being completed.”

“The independent directors consider the restraining order to be unwarranted and damaging and will move as swiftly as possible to seek to have it removed.”

“A further statement will be made in due course.”

Mr Justice Floyd had earlier upheld the claim by RBS for breach of contract against Hicks and Gillett after they attempted to block the sale last week by dissolving the board, contravening an agreement signed as a condition of refinancing last April that also led to the appointment of Broughton. The QC representing Hicks and Gillett had said in court that the pair accepted their time as owners of Liverpool had come to an end but that they believed the club was worth more than it was being sold for.

Ruling that their actions in seeking to block the deal represented "the clearest possible breach" of a corporate governance agreement signed with RBS in April as a condition of refinancing, Mr Justice Floyd ordered Hicks and Gillett to allow the club's board to be reconstituted in its original form by 8pm last night.

VIDEO: Full interview with Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton

Liverpool Football Club today announces that the Board has agreed the sale of the Club to New England Sports Ventures (NESV).

New England Sports Ventures currently owns a portfolio of companies including the Boston Red Sox, New England Sports Network, Fenway Sports Group and Roush Fenway Racing.

Martin Broughton, Liverpool FC Chairman, said:

"I am delighted that we have been able to successfully conclude the sale process which has been thorough and extensive. The Board decided to accept NESV's proposal on the basis that it best met the criteria we set out originally for a suitable new owner. NESV's philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at Red Sox.

"We've met them in Boston, London and Liverpool over several weeks and I am immensely impressed with what they have achieved and with their vision for Liverpool Football Club.

"By removing the burden of acquisition debt, this offer allows us to focus on investment in the team. I am only disappointed that the owners have tried everything to prevent the deal from happening and that we need to go through legal proceedings in order to complete the sale."

Note to editors:

The sale is conditional on Premier League approval, resolution of the dispute concerning Board membership and other matters.

Liverpool FC Chairman Martin Broughton has spoken about why he believes New England Sports Ventures are the perfect fit for LFC and why he's confident the sale decision could be completed by close of business next week.

Carling Cup: Reds crash out on penalties

Northampton Town produced one of the shocks of the season as they dumped Liverpool out of the Carling Cup with a 4-2 win on penalties at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Cobblers defied all the odds to book a place in round four after both David Ngog and Nathan Eccleston missed for the home side during the shoot-out.

The Reds had forced spot-kicks when Ngog headed in his seventh goal of the season on 115 minutes to deny Michael Jacobs the headlines after Billy McKay had cancelled out Milan Jovanovic's opener in normal time.

It means the League Two outfit have become the first side from English football's fourth tier to defeat the Reds in this competition and leaves Roy Hodgson to pick up the pieces ahead of Saturday's league clash at home to Sunderland.

Liverpool had gone into the tie on the back of a narrow 3-2 defeat at Manchester United and Hodgson opted to the use the occasion to take a closer look at his fringe players.

In came Brad Jones and Danny Wilson to make their Liverpool debuts while Jay Spearing, Martin Kelly and Dani Pacheco were amongst a clutch of youngsters eager to make an impression. [Read more…]

Premier League: Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool

Dimitar Berbatov smashed home a hat-trick as Manchester United edged a pulsating encounter to beat Liverpool 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The striker netted either side of half-time to put the Red Devils firmly in the driving seat before a quick-fire Steven Gerrard brace pulled the visitors level.

(Photo by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda) However, the Bulgarian ensured United would enjoy the bragging rights when he nodded in his third of the game six minutes from the end to leave the away side empty-handed.

It means Roy Hodgson's men have now lost two of their opening five league matches and they remain in the bottom half of the table with just five points.

The Reds had gone into the contest with their arch-rivals on the back of a 4-1 success over Steaua Bucharest and the travelling Kop would have been further buoyed by the sight of Fernando Torres, Joe Cole and Gerrard in the starting XI. [Read more…]

Europa League: Liverpool 4-1 Steaua Bucharest

Joe Cole scored his first goal for Liverpool and David Ngog notched a brace as the Reds beat Steaua Bucharest 4-1 in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The midfielder had the honour of firing home the club's fastest ever goal in European competition on 27 seconds before Ngog (penalty) and substitute Lucas Leiva put them back in the driving seat after Cristian Tanase had levelled with a sublime first-half finish.

Ngog then put the icing on the cake with a well taken fourth in injury-time to take his tally to six for the season so far.

It means Liverpool have opened their Group K account with an important victory and also sees Hodgson become the first Reds manager in history to win his first five European games.

Going into the clash the boss had opted to make eight changes to his line-up with both Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard amongst a host of players rested for Sunday's league contest at Manchester United. [Read more…]
